Behavior Interventionist

Job Description 

To assist school personnel in managing students with severe and chronic behavioral disorders, maintaining the safety of the school environment and responding effectively to crisis situations. To collaborate with building administration on the day to day operations of school-wide Positive Behavior Interventions & Support including restorative practices.

Recommended Employment Qualifications:
1. Associates Degree; or completion of at least two (2) years at an institution of higher learning
(equal to sixty (60) semester hours) or equivalent required.
2. Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Social Work, Psychology or related field preferred.
3. Training and/or experience working with students with disabilities in a school setting is preferred.
4. Willingness and ability to serve as Key Personnel on a frequent, perhaps daily basis, which may
necessitate the use of emergency intervention measures.
5. Specialized training including de-escalation and crisis response, Positive Behavior Intervention
and Supports (PBIS) and Restorative Practices with the experience and skill necessary to train
and coach peers in the implementation of these practices.
6. Maturity, patience, and people skills to work effectively with students with significant abilities.
7. Ability and willingness to work independently with minimal supervision.
8. Strong, demonstrated interpersonal skills, both written and oral.
9. Such alternatives, to the above qualifications as Square 1 Strategy may find appropriate and
acceptable.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

❖ Assist in maintaining a positive school environment that promotes safety, security, and well-being
for all students.
❖ Consistently follow school-wide behavioral intervention sequence and follow individual behavior
intervention plans as appropriate.
❖ Demonstrate effective behavior management skills and ability to implement preventative and
reductive interventions and teach replacement behaviors.
❖ Demonstrate effective de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques with students and remain
calm and neutral to prevent escalation of student behavior.
❖ Train others on de-escalation, crisis intervention and PBIS including school wide PBIS and
Restorative Practices, etc.
❖ Ability to take on leadership roles/activities, as well as develop and run professional learning
opportunities.
❖ Assist in day to day operation of school wide PBIS including Restorative Practices.

❖ Maintain accurate documentation into School Information System (PowerSchool, etc.), and run
reports requested by teachers or administration.
❖ Operate and care for equipment as needed.
❖ Alert appropriate personnel to any problem or special information about individual students.
❖ Assist substitute teacher(s).
❖ Perform other tasks as assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or administration.

9. Demonstrated ability to adhere to the district and Building policies and procedures.
10. Ability to be on the job regularly and have a positive attendance record.
11. Ability to utilize technology (i.e., telephone, cell phone, iPad, laptop computer, Chromebook,
desktop computer, printer, copier, fax machine, etc.)
12. Ability to drive between district school buildings, Muskegon Area ISD buildings, and to
workshops, meetings, and conferences throughout the city/state.
13. Available to work Monday-Friday with occasional evenings and/or weekends.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk; occasional stooping, bending, and reaching. Close vision is required to perform computer related tasks. The employee must have the ability to lift and/or move up to 60 pounds and attend to the personal care of students.
