Athletic Director 25-26

 JOB DESCRIPTION: The Athletic Director is responsible for the overall administration, coordination, and supervision of the district-wide athletic program. This includes ensuring compliance with district policies, league regulations, and state athletic association rules, while promoting student participation, sportsmanship, and academic success. The Athletic Director also supports student learning, oversees personnel management, coordinates emergency procedures, and manages facility operations. Additionally, this position is responsible for implementing building-level athletic programming aligned with district expectations and Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) policies and procedures. 

Reports To: MHPSA Administration 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Sports Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience) preferred. State of Michigan administrative certification preferred, or willingness and ability to obtain. 

  • Worked successfully for a period of at least 2-5 years in the educational field preferred.  

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong organizational and leadership abilities. 

  • Ability to positively collaborate with all stakeholders- students, staff, parents, community.

  • Comprehensive understanding of MHSAA rules, regulations, and guidelines.

  • High school coaching experience (preferred) 

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage all interscholastic athletic programs district-wide

  • Work collaboratively with the District Administration to implement high quality athletic programming.

  • Ensure compliance with district policies, league regulations, and Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) rules and requirement

  • Develops, implements, manages, and analyzes all aspects of the athletic budget, including purchasing, inventory control, financial tracking, and expenditure monitoring to ensure fiscal responsibility and alignment with district priorities. 

  • Administers and manages all aspects of the high school athletic program in compliance with district policies. Organizes, directs, and promotes a comprehensive interscholastic athletic program that aligns with and adheres to the rules and regulations of the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA), while fostering sportsmanship, student participation, and academic success.

  • Leads the hiring, supervision, mentoring, and evaluation of all coaching staff. Provides structured support for onboarding new coaches and promotes ongoing professional development to ensure program quality, consistency, and alignment with district and athletic association expectations. 

  • Coordinates and manages the scheduling of athletic contests, including assignment of event workers and transportation logistics. Provides supervision and support to coaching staff to ensure program consistency and compliance with expectations. Oversees the recruitment, assignment, and coordination of event staff to ensure efficient and effective operation of all athletic events. 

  • Provides oversight of student-athlete eligibility, ensuring compliance with academic standards, attendance requirements, and all participation guidelines. Addresses and manages student-athlete disciplinary matters in a fair and consistent manner, in accordance with district policies, building expectations, and athletic program standards. 

  • Assumes responsibility for the safety, administration, and maintenance of all athletic facilities and equipment, ensuring they are properly maintained, safe for use, and in compliance with district standards and applicable regulations. 

  • Supervises the maintenance of files and records on athlete physicals, athlete insurance program, and participation.

  • Conducts seasonal meetings with coaches and parents to review and communicate athletic program rules, regulations, and expectations. Topics include, but are not limited to, the Student Athlete Code of Conduct, Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) rules and requirements, student-athlete eligibility standards, and procedures related to code of conduct violations.

  • Acts as liaison between coaches and building parent booster groups.

  • Attends Athletic Director meetings.

  • Organize to get into an athletic league

  • Perform such other duties as assigned.
